About VSG
Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy is an effective surgical tool in the battle against obesity. It is a non-reversible surgery designed to help candidates whose Body Mass Index ( BMI ) is above 40, or patients with a BMI of 35 or above who suffer from obesity-related health conditions such as type II Diabetes, Hypertension, or Cardiovascular Diseases.
The procedure, used by Dr. H. Joseph Naim an LA based bariatric surgeon at the forefront of weight loss surgery, is done with five small incisions. Taking an hour to complete it requires only an overnight hospital stay. The surgery induces weight loss by laparoscopically removing 80% of the patient’s stomach so that the stomach is re-contoured into a narrow “sleeve”.
By reducing the stomach and its capacity to produce Ghrelin, a hormone responsible for your sensation of hunger, it increases the chance of a sustained weight loss. Physically, the remaining stomach will hold no more than a 100-150 ml., or less than one cup of volume.
This procedure is exciting because it avoids some earlier complications and concerns. Since the anatomy of the gastro-intestinal tract is not changed, it reduces the risks of post surgery malnutrition. |
